Orchids have a special meaning:
Love, Beauty, Refinement and Thoughtfulness
One song can spark a moment,
one flower can make a dream.
One tree can start a forest,
one bird can herald spring.
One smile begins a friendship,
one handclasp lifts the soul.
One star can guide a ship at sea,
one word can frame the goal.
One vote can change a nation,
one sunbeam lights a room.
One candle wipes out darkness,
one laugh will conquer gloom.
One step must start a journey,
one word must start each prayer.
One hope will raise our spirits,
one touch can show you care.
One voice can speak with wisdom,
one heart can know what's true.
One life can make the difference,
you see, it's up to you.

Orchids are the National Flower of Singapore.
They are commonly found in Asia and South and
Central America, and are the largest family of
the plant kingdom with over 20,000 species.
Confucius acknowledged orchids saying,
"the association with a superior person
is like entering a hall of orchids."
In a Chinese flower arranging book, dated in 1595,
"A treatise of Vase Flowers" by Chang Ch'ien-te,
said orchids were top in the ranking of desirability.
Orchids are divided into three categories, namely
climbing, epiphytic and terrestrial. Orchids are
parasites in nature, as they grow on wild trees
and love dead trees.
The world's largest orchid can grow to 20m long.
The orchid Vanda Miss Joaquim was discovered in the
garden of Miss Agnes Joaquim in 1893 and registered
in the same year. Among the several varieties of
Vanda Miss Joaquim, the variety "Agnes" was chosen
to be the National Flower of Singapore in 1981.
